Creating calm and connection at Dunlap High School

Big things are happening at Dunlap High School, where teachers Nicole Zook and Avery Robinson, along with Principal Tim Kennedy, are working together to enhance the school’s sensory room. With the help of grant funds from The Hambrick Foundation, the educators are taking the next step in creating a calming, inclusive space for students with sensory needs—and we couldn’t be more excited to support their vision!

Nicole's plans for her awarded grant funds are to add a swing to the sensory room, an essential piece of equipment that has already proven successful for students at the middle school level.

“Several students in our life skills program (including a large group of incoming freshmen) have sensory needs,” Nicole wrote. “Our dream is to create a sensory room that meets the needs of all of our students and allows them a space to move freely and give them the sensory input that their bodies need."

Recipient Avery Robinson is spearheading improvements like sound-absorbing tiles and sensory equipment to help reduce distractions and create a quieter, more peaceful environment.

Principal Tim Kennedy explained, “The sensory room may be used by any student in the building with a focus on the special education programming needs. The expansion of our sensory program will decrease negative behaviors, increase time in the classroom for learning, and provide a safe space for students.”

The sensory room will provide a lifeline for students who need a break, support, or sensory regulation to thrive throughout the school day. Whether it’s calming anxiety, meeting sensory input needs, or supporting students during a mental health crisis, this space will serve as a powerful resource for years to come.

We’re proud to support Nicole, Avery, and the entire Dunlap team as they create a calm environment where their students can connect. It’s amazing to see what can happen when teachers come together to make a difference!
