Ridgeview Elementary School 4th and 5th-grade special education students recently welcomed a new classroom pet. Thanks to the creative vision of teacher Sheri Eppel, students are now learning how to care for their frog, Pablo.
Why a frog, you ask? Because for Sheri’s students—many of whom have Autism, ADHD, anxiety, or other learning challenges—a classroom pet can turn lessons into engaging, real-world experiences. Whether it’s math problems (How long will 100 mealworms last if the frog eats two a day?) or writing prompts, this new addition is set to bring hands-on learning to life.
“Some of my students need something to look forward to at school. Hopefully, being given the responsibility of taking care of a pet will motivate them to come to school more regularly,” Sheri explained in her grant application.
Beyond academics, Sheri sees the frog as a source of emotional growth, responsibility, and joy for her students—and for the 70 special education students at Ridgeview who will also benefit from visiting her classroom.
“The majority of my students are animal lovers," she added. "They will feel special that they have the opportunity to have a classroom pet, which most others don’t.”
We can’t wait to hear about all the math equations, stories, and smiles inspired by this little classroom critter. We're thrilled to help bring creativity, care, and joy to Sheri's students’ lives!
